General Information
CS 592, or CS Colloquia consist a series of invited talks aiming to broaden the knowledge of Computer Science faculty and students. Currently, the CS592 is offered once a week in the fall and twice a week in the spring. CS Colloquia is required for all graduate students, and may be repeated, with at most two credits towards the M.S. requirements, and at most two further credits towards the Ph.D. requirements.
Grading:
After each colloquium session, student who are enrolled are expected to write a short paragraph (no more than 100 words) to demonstrate that they have thought about the material. As a graduate student, we expect you to be able to go beyond a simple summary of the material, and to some extent be able to relate the material to something you've seen before, or at least ask a coherent question. The following are some example of what you could include in your comments:
- Questions/comments of application and motivation of the talk. For example, "The problem speaker solved seems like a simplified version of the real world problem. Why should we care about this work?"
- Questions about clarification of the content. For example, “The speaker's explanation of the red-blue vertex cover problem was really unclear. Is it NP-hard? What is the reduction?")
- Questions on methods. For example, “It seems the nonnegative least square optimization would solve the problem a lot better and faster than graph algorithmic techniques.", or "The speaker reported time of their experimentation. Is it possible to replace all the floating point calculations with integer calculations using scaling? How much faster would it be?"
- Questions or suggestions about where to apply this, beyond what the speaker suggested. For example, "Could you apply this idea to the treatment planning of proton therapy?”
- Questions about relations to other fields. For example, “Have the problem been solved by the operations research community?" or "The treatment planning problem of RFA is a lot like this one, how do they solve it?"
Course Policies
- Students must finish comments independently.
- The comments for each colloquium must be emailed to by 5pm on the date of the colloquia.
- We expect everyone taking the colloquia for credit to physically attend the colloquia. Please use this email address only for submitting your colloquia questions. Excused absences due to personal reasons or approved University travel must follow university policy. In the case of foreseen absence, instructor must be informed prior to the absence date. In the event of a missed colloquium, the student will be given an id and password to access the taped colloquium session and turned in his/her comments within a week of their travel.
