How can we make the Internet a safer place? PhD student Benjamin Edwards uses tools from Complex Systems and Network Science to make cyberspace safer for everyone. Ben came to UNM from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with degrees in Computer Engineering and Applied Mathematics. Ben is developing statistical and agent-based models to identify which cyber security interventions are effective on the global scale of the Internet. For example, he has studied how filtering should be applied to best control the spread of malware across the Internet; proposed methods that go beyond blacklists for search engines to protect users. He is currently studying how some malware reduction efforts can be detrimental to in some parts of the world. He and his advisor, Stephanie Forrest, are conducting this research in collaboration with researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Southern Methodist University, and Delft University of Technology.
