Title: Getting a Doctoral Degree – What It Takes and Where It Takes You

Abstract:
The conversational style of this colloquium is intended to foster an open and wide ranging discussion on topics related to the fundamental question of why one might pursue a doctoral degree, particularly in science and engineering. The goal is to help students develop a better understanding of what pursuing such a degree entails, the professional opportunities it offers, and the impact such training has on the future of science and engineering. Arguments against taking the time to get a doctorate will also be examined. Finally, the career paths opened by
the doctoral degree will be outlined in some detail while touching on practical issues such as job market prospects, preparing for interviews, and strategies for success in academic, research, and other settings.
