Progress Logs

CS491/591 • Spring 2026 • University of New Mexico

Due: 5 logs, Weeks 11-15 (see schedule below)
Format: Short-answer responses on Canvas Quizzes
Weight: Half of the Project Diary (7.5% of overall course grade)

Progress logs are individual: submit your own, separately from your teammates. They help your instructor track your week-to-week work and give you a space to flag challenges early. You won't be penalized if your log doesn't match what your teammates write, and you don't need to compile them into your final paper (though you're welcome to draw on them when writing your Group Reflection in the final paper).

Schedule

Log Due
Progress Log 1 Week 11, Thursday 4/2
Progress Log 2 Week 12, Thursday 4/9
Progress Log 3 Week 13, Thursday 4/16
Progress Log 4 Week 14, Thursday 4/23
Progress Log 5 Week 15, Thursday 4/30

Format

Each log will be a quiz assignment on Canvas with six (6) short-answer questions. Each answer must be at least 1-2 sentences long. Please be as succinct as possible. For any time-sensitive or urgent matters, contact the instructor directly.

Structure

The log questions will cover:
  1. What you did this week. Specific activities, commits, conversations, or tasks you worked on.
  2. Community interactions. Did you post to a mailing list, open an issue, comment on a PR, or attend a community meeting? What did you learn?
  3. Technical progress. Describe any code written, documentation created, designs made, bugs investigated, etc. Link to anything public (commits, issues, PRs) if you have them or share screenshots.
  4. Challenges. What's difficult right now? What's blocking you? Flagging problems early is encouraged, you won't be penalized for struggling.
  5. Reflections. What are you learning? What surprised you this week?
  6. Next steps. What do you plan to work on during the next week?

Grading

Each log will be graded on completion at is worth 10 points.

Your five log scores are averaged together and combined with your Project Reflection score to make up your Project Diary grade. See the late work policy for penalty details.

Submission

Submit directly in the appropriate Canvas quiz, no file upload needed.

Please remember this is an individual assignment.
