Project Introduction

The Vanuatu Rock-Art Conservation Training Project is an international collaborative project between local chiefs and villagers from the island of Malakula (Vanuatu), the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and university-trained specialists from Australia and America. Our aim is to document and to ensure the long-term preservation of cultural places in north-west Malakula. By working together, local people, Vanuatu Cultural Centre representatives and scientists aim to develop a management plan for the sites of Yalo, Apialo and related places. The need for such a plan emerged because of the sites' cultural importance, and their potential damage by earthquakes and other sources of deterioration.

The Project was initiated in 1998 by Meredith Wilson (Australian National University), Chief Pita Dan Senembe, Chief Jimmysan Sanhambath and Vanuatu Cultural Centre Director Ralph Regenvanu.
