The New Elgin Hotel
Though today most of Darjeeling, as can be seen in the
previous photograph, consists of ugly concrete block construction, there are
still echoes of the raj left in what the British would have referred to
as "better establishments."
We were put up in a lovely boutique hotel, the New Elgin, which was built
in 1887 and has functioned as a hotel for almost 100 years. The public
rooms were especially elegant, with a very nice lounge and bar. The
restaurant served Indian food, but toned down to suit the taste buds
of the average American and European -- I asked for achar
(a spicy Indian pickle), and, so, became a favorite of the wait
staff.
