Sunrise at Dzongri Hill
They got us up early this morning so we could reach
the top of Dzongri Hill, about a half-hour hike from our campground, just
as the sun was lighting up the high peaks. This, along with a sighting
from the trail later in the day, just before we dropped into the Prek river
valley, were our clearest views of Kanchenjunga [8,598m/28,208ft], the
world's third tallest mountain. Kabru South and North, partially obscured
by cloud (Kabru Dome, in front of Kabru South and North, is clearly
visible) and only 15 kilometers/9-1/2 miles away, seem higher. From
Dzongri Hill, Kanchenjunga, to the right of the Kabru peaks, is
24 kilometers/15 miles away.
