Tyson Swetnam

Dr. Swetnam's research interests and career began in the US National Park Service and US Forest Service as a wildland firefighter and Fire Management Specialist working in hydrology, ecology, and remote sensing. His quantitative graduate research required advanced research computing resources and working with so-called "big data". In 2013 he began working with the NSF CyVerse cyberinfrastructure project at University of Arizona, where he became a Data Scientist in 2016, and research faculty in 2019. Over the last 10 years, Dr. Swetnam has served as PI, Co-PI, and senior personnel on over a dozen funded research projects for cyberinfrastructure, artificial intelligence, cloud and high-performance computing (HPC). In 2026, Dr. Swetnam became the Director for the Center for Advanced Research Computing (CARC), where he continues to develop new and novel platforms for scientific research using artificial intelligence, cloud and HPC.
