Computer Science assistant professor positions open
September 19, 2019
The Department of Computer Science in the School of Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for multiple full-time tenure-track positions at the level of Assistant Professor. We seek applicants demonstrating excellence in Computer Science or related disciplines. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in (1) cybersecurity, (2) machine learning and data science, (3) quantum information science, (4) high-performance computing, or (5) biological computing, though strong candidates in all areas of computing will be considered. We are an inter-disciplinary, family-friendly department located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our research and instruction push the boundaries in both core Computer Science and its intersections with other fields.
UNM CS is committed to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education, offering an ABET-accredited BS undergraduate program with 500 majors, and MS and PhD programs with 200 graduate students. Our programs include a strong Computer Science core as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary education through cross-disciplinary programs such as the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media (IFDM) program, UNM Computer Science for All (CS4All), and the Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) graduate certificate program.
The Department has seventeen tenure-track faculty whose research is funded by agencies including NSF, NIH, DARPA, ARO, NASA, and DOE. We are a collegial department housed in the new and modern Farris Engineering Center. Our faculty excel in interdisciplinary research through numerous collaborations with other UNM schools, departments, and research centers such as the Center for Biomedical Engineering, the Center for Advanced Research Computing, and the UNM Health Sciences Center.
In addition, UNM has extensive ties and a long history of collaboration with nearby research centers such as Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories, the Santa Fe Institute, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. UNM has recently executed a formal memorandum of understanding with Los Alamos that allow for joint UNM faculty/LANL laboratory staff appointments, and UNM is working on similar agreements with other institutions. Candidates interested in a joint appointment with Los Alamos National Laboratory are particularly encouraged to apply.
UNM is the premier research university in the state of New Mexico. UNM is a Carnegie Very High Research Activity Institution and a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution. It is the only flagship university in the US where a majority of students identify as Hispanic/Latino or Native American. The UNM School of Engineering is partnering with ADVANCE at UNM, an NSF Institutional Transformation grant to help recruit and retain an excellent and diverse faculty. 40% of UNM CS faculty are women and 20% are from minority groups underrepresented in Computer Science. As such, UNM CS offers a unique opportunity to increase diversity in Computer Science.
UNM is located in Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico. It is an ethnically diverse city with a rich and tolerant culture, fantastic weather, and unparalleled opportunities for outdoor adventure, including hiking, biking, rock climbing, and skiing.
To qualify, applicants must have completed a doctorate in CS or a related area by August 15, 2020. In accordance with UNM policies, applicants will additionally be evaluated on these following preferred qualifications: (1) demonstrated ability to establish a nationally visible research program; (2) commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; and (3) demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, and working broadly with diverse communities.
For best consideration, complete applications including reference letters must be received by December 1, 2019. The position will remain open until filled. Each application must include a cover letter summarizing the applicant’s experience, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and four letters of reference. Candidates interested in consideration for a joint appointment with Los Alamos National Laboratory should indicate so in their cover letter.
Applicants may also include in their application an optional statement, no more than one page in length, on their experiences and perspectives related to item (3) above. Alternatively, if appropriate, applicants may address this topic in their cover letter or in their teaching or research statements.
Please have references send letters to: unmcsfacultysearch@cs.unm.edu. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that letters of reference are submitted before the application deadline. No application materials other than reference letters will be accepted via email.
UNM’s confidentiality policy, which includes information about public disclosure of documents submitted by applicants, is located at https://policy.unm.edu/regents-policies/section-6/6-7.html. Inquiries should be emailed to the Chair of the CS Department, Darko Stefanovic (darko@cs.unm.edu).
