Computer Science Colloquium will discuss strategies for sustainable AI data centers

The University of New Mexico Department of Computer Science will hold a colloquium titled, “Towards Sustainable AI with Cost- and Energy-Efficient GPU Data Centers,” delivered by Xiaorui Wang, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Ohio State University.
The talk is scheduled to take place Wednesday, March 12 at 2 p.m. in Larañaga Auditorium in the Centennial Engineering Center.
As companies race to develop artificial intelligence infrastructure, demand for data centers, which consume huge amounts of electricity, is increasing. If left unmanaged, this rapid expansion could have negative environmental impacts. In the talk, Wang will introduce ongoing research on a holistic cost and energy management framework designed to improve the sustainability of large-scale GPU data centers.
His research has revealed the high costs of GPU data centers are cost in part because GPUs in the systems are underutilized and because it is expensive to upgrade power infrastructures to ost such large numbers of new GPUs. Wang will present research indicating how GPUs can be utilized more efficiently and power control can enable effective hosting of more GPUs without expensive upgrades. He will also discuss how to exploit renewable energy to minimize the reliance of AI development on power grids energized by fossil fuels.
Wang is an IEEE Fellow, recipient of the 2016 OSU Lumley Research Award, and a recipient of a 2009 NSF CAREER Award, among other accolades.
